the place between

Exhibited: 13th - 30th July 2023

Location: Middleton Hall, centre:mk, Milton Keynes, UK

The Place Between is an installation by Rebecca Louise Law with soundscapes by Jason Singh for IF:Milton Keynes International Festival.

The Festival is designed to encourage residents and visitors to see a different side to Milton Keynes. Presenting a world-class, multi-arts programme the Festival includes new commissions, site-specific and community participation projects, large-scale/outdoor and family events, concerts, theatre, dance, music and visual arts installations.

The Place Between consists of 8-metre strands that are suspended to create a huge, immersive hanging garden inviting visitors to explore the connection we have to our Earth, the connection we have to each other and our contribution to the cycle of life.

The installation has inspired specially created immersive soundscapes by sound-artist Jason Singh. Using sensors attached to a wide range of plants and trees from across Milton Keynes, Jason has captured biodata to reveal their inner songs. Wearing headphones, visitors are able to listen to these beautiful soundscapes as they navigate their way through the installation.

Collaborating with local organisations and the people of Milton Keynes has been instrumental to realising the project. Law invited groups and individuals to forage, grow and donate plant materials which were added to her personal collection and used in the installation.  Undertaking to wire each individual item, Law worked with her team, locally-based artists and the public, making connections with each other as they work together with the plant material.
