state of nature

Exhibited: 27th February 2026 - 1st November 2026

Locations: Museum Island at Gottorf Castle, Globe House at Gottorf, Jewish Museum Rendsburg, Molfsee Open-Air Museum

State of Nature invites the viewer to move through four installations across four locations in Schleswig-Holstein.

‘PLACEHOLDER.’
- Rebecca Louise Law

At Museum Island at Gottorf Castle, Florilegia brings together around one million dried flowers from my personal archive, alongside paintings and ceramic works. At the Globe House, Honesty is made from thousands of shimmering lunaria leaves. At the Jewish Museum Rendsburg, Grain centres on wheat and grain heads. At Molfsee Open-Air Museum, The Field is formed from oats and flowers grown on the museum’s own land, harvested and prepared with the community.

A central part of this project is the involvement of people at each location. Through the Blomentüddel Clubs, plants were grown, harvested, dried and prepared by many hands. Local materials and shared labour are woven into the installations, allowing each place to shape the work from within.

Florilegia
Museum Island at Gottorf Castle

An installation of around one million dried flowers from Rebeccas personal archive, shown alongside paintings and ceramic works. The installation opens a path through preserved materials, memory and scale, creating an immersive environment shaped by colour, texture and time.

Compton Verney commissioned film maker Mark Jones to document the exhibition with a short film.

pAINTINGS & Weaves

Seasons was commissioned before the onset of the global pandemic, but recent events have made the project more resonant. Lockdowns throughout 2020 and 2021 grounded Rebecca at her home in Snowdonia, giving her ‘the gift of time’. Her poignant nature diaries, paintings and colourful natural weaves were created during an unprecedented period in global history. Law describes the process of observing and recording nature daily as nurturing and healing - a sentiment shared by many who found solace in the delights of nature unfolding on their doorsteps.
